GPS Running Game

Chase virtual animals using your real-world movement and GPS. Choose a distance and difficulty, find your target and see whether you can catch it.

Speed & Interval Training

Train to a target pace or build your own workout using timed and distance intervals, recovery periods, warm-ups and additional exercises.

Heart-Rate Training

Heart-rate controlled workouts are being developed for Wear OS, allowing training intervals to respond to how quickly your heart rate rises and recovers.

A location-based game built around running

PetHunter began with a simple idea: instead of GPS merely recording a run, why not make your real-world movement part of a game?

Chase virtual animals in the real world

Choose a running distance and difficulty level, locate a virtual animal and start the chase. Your own movement is tracked by GPS while the animal runs at a speed determined by its level and distance.

You choose the route, so you can stick to roads, paths and running routes that you know are suitable rather than being forced to follow the animal's exact direction.

  • Challenges from 100 metres to 100-mile distances
  • Difficulty levels from walking pace to extreme running speeds
  • Rare, common and special virtual animals
  • Full GPS recording continues even after a pet is caught

Location based GPS running game PetHunter

Looking for a Pokémon Go-style running game?

Location-based games can make getting outside more interesting, but PetHunter was designed specifically around running and fitness.

Instead of simply travelling to locations, PetHunter gives you virtual animals to chase. Their speed and endurance create the challenge, while your actual movement provides the action.

Start with animals you can catch at an easy pace and progress towards increasingly difficult targets as your fitness and running speed improve.

PetHunter is an independent running app and is not affiliated with Pokémon Go, Niantic or The Pokémon Company.

Serious training when you don't want to play

Chasing an animal isn't the right workout every time. PetHunter's Wear OS training tools give you another reason to keep the app on your watch.

Speed & custom interval sessions

Use PetHunter as a structured running trainer without starting a pet chase. Your watch guides the session while recording your activity as GPS data.

⚡ Target Pace Training

Select the pace you want to maintain and start running. If your speed drops below the target, your watch can notify you and trigger a recovery period before you continue.

⏱ Custom Intervals

Build sessions using either time or distance. Mix different running intervals, rests, warm-ups and exercises into a workout that suits your training.

For example: warm up for 10 minutes, run 200m, recover for one minute, run 400m, recover again, then add another exercise.

⌚ Guided From Your Watch

Run the session directly from Wear OS. Your watch tells you when each interval starts and finishes and displays what you need to do next.

📍 Record & Export Your Run

Training sessions can be recorded as GPX activities. Review the activity through PetHunter or download the GPX file for use with services such as Strava.

Heart-rate controlled speed sessions

PetHunter is being expanded to use the heart-rate sensor built into compatible Wear OS watches during speed training.

Instead of relying only on a fixed recovery time, the workout can respond to your body.

  • Run hard until you reach your chosen upper heart-rate target
  • Recover while your watch continues monitoring your pulse
  • Start the next effort when your heart rate falls to your recovery threshold
  • Record heart-rate data alongside your GPS activity

This creates intervals that respond to how quickly you reach the target intensity and how quickly you recover between efforts.

How the PetHunter running game works

Choose how far you want to run, select a suitable difficulty and then see what animal you can catch.

1

Choose Your Mode

In Hunting Mode, search for a pet in your area before chasing it. Training Mode lets you start a chase immediately.

2

Select a Distance

Choose anything from a short 100-metre challenge to ultramarathon distances depending on the run you want to do.

3

Choose Your Level

The level determines how fast your animal runs. Higher levels create increasingly difficult challenges.

Hunting Pets

When you locate a pet, run towards it to start the chase. You can choose your own route for safety, allowing you to stick to your preferred roads, paths or running routes while continuing the hunt.

Pet Escapes

Pets have a limited number of opportunities to escape. Longer-distance animals have more escape chances, so sprinting after them every time may leave you exhausted long before the challenge is finished.

Pets Get Tired

As an animal approaches the end of its assigned distance it begins to tire and its speed drops. A 10K animal, for example, can maintain its normal pace for most of the challenge before slowing towards the end.

If you catch your pet before completing your planned run, PetHunter continues recording your GPS activity so you can finish the full distance.

Saving Your Runs

Hunts are recorded as GPS activities. You can review previous hunts through your PetHunter account and control whether you want to share activities with friends.

Create Your Own Virtual Pets

Catching pets earns tokens which can be used to create and release your own virtual animals. They can be released worldwide or restricted to particular areas, with their difficulty based on the highest distances and levels you have achieved.

Create your own virtual pet in PetHunter

Add your own pet to the game

Upload a photo and create a virtual version of your own family pet for other PetHunter users to discover and chase.

It could be your cat, dog, hamster or even a favourite toy or imaginary creature. Choose where to release it and turn your own pet into part of the game.

All submitted pet images must be suitable for all audiences and are approved before becoming available to other players.
